Intention to Nominate CH (MAJ) Stephen Michael Feinstein 2nd Vice President of the Southern Baptist Convention

On December 31, 2019, I announced my intention to nominate CH (MAJ) Stephen Feinstein for 2nd Vice President of the Southern Baptist Convention at the 2020 meeting in Orlando, Florida, if the Lord allows.

Stephen Feinstein is a husband, father, and pastor of Sovereign Way Christian Church, a multi-ethnic church plant in Hesperia, California. Feinstein is also a Major in the United States Army Reserve, where he has faithfully served as Chaplain through the North American Missions Board since 2009. Feinstein is from a secular Jewish family but converted to Christ at the age of 17. He holds a Master of Arts from Liberty University and a Master of Divinity from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Feinstein has chosen to give his life to missions through church planting, the pastorate, and the chaplaincy. Feinstein’s church reported Great Commission giving of $7,857 in 2019. Additionally, in 2017, Feinstein’s church gave $3,039 to the North American Mission Board and $2,161 to the International Mission Board; in 2018, $1,505 to NAMB and $4,957 to IMB; and in 2019, $1,000 to NAMB and $2,806 to IMB (these numbers are not visible in reported giving through the Annual Church Profile records). Although these are not large sums of money, they nevertheless demonstrate the church’s continual and, Lord willing, increasing involvement with and support for the work of missions through the SBC.

Our culture is currently marred by unsettling ideologies, church shootings, racial division, anti-Semitism, and political polarization. What stands out about Feinstein is his exemplary ability to sift through that confusion while maintaining his commitment to truth, civility, and hope for the future. In the future, we are likely to see more bi-vocational pastors serving smaller and more diverse churches in increasingly hostile ministry contexts. Pastor Feinstein has served in the aforementioned manner for years, and in that sense, represents the future of the SBC.

Expect more posts on this topic in the very near future.
